The George E. Jonas Foundation

The George E. Jonas Foundation runs a European summer school for girls by the age of 15-16 years. Of about 50 participants, most come from countries in Eastern, Central and Western Europe, while the rest come from other parts of the world. The girls are selected among applicants who are active, talented and extrovert, who have leadership potential, and who speak English. The summer school lasts 2 months, and it promotes the development of humanistic, democratic values based on tolerance and international understanding across cultural, religious, racial, national and social barriers. At the same time it aims to stimulate the girls to take upon themselves responsibility for their own life as well as for the life of others. The initiative to establish the summer school and the foundation was taken by Danish alumni who since the Second World War have participated in two similar American summer schools, Camp Rising Sun. These two summer schools, one for girls and one for boys, are run by an American foundation, The Louis August Jonas Foundation. The Danish George E. Jonas Foundation is independent from the American Foundation.
